Food production relies on the availability of resources, such as land, freshwater, energy and nutrients. Current consumption or degradation of these resources exceeds their global regeneration rate. Scrutiny also continues to mount against wild fisheries due to overfishing, discarding non-target species, pollution, and damage to local habitats.

Under this context, Habitat has identified aquaponics as a farming approach that, through nutrient and waste recycling, can aid in protecting these resources and meet the sustainable development goals of food production.

Aquaponics is a food production system that combines aquaculture, the cultivation of aquatic organisms, with hydroponics, the cultivation of plants in nutrient-enriched water. This horticultural solution increases food production per acre of land, conserves water, replaces the use of chemical fertilizers, and replaces the use of both capital and resource intensive potting soils leaving a minimal carbon footprint and impact on the environment.
